In Memory of Dr. Hugo Fernández Bellon ’94

A Life Dedicated to Conservation, Compassion, and Community

ASB mourns the passing of Dr. Hugo Fernández Bellon, beloved alumnus from the Class of 1994, brother of Oscar ’95 and Dario ’00, and son of long-time ASB elementary teacher Ms. Febe Bellon (1986–2018). Hugo passed away in January at the age of 48 following an accident.

Hugo was a highly respected leader in wildlife veterinary medicine, with two decades of experience as lead veterinarian at the Barcelona Zoo and as Executive Director of the European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians (EAZWV). After earning his veterinary degree from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in 1999, he was awarded a predoctoral grant that allowed him to pursue training in zoological pathology while completing a PhD focused on veterinary immunology and epidemiology.

He joined the Barcelona Zoo in 2003 and built a career marked by deep commitment to the welfare of animals and the advancement of conservation science. Through his work, he contributed to international efforts focused on zoo animal welfare and infectious diseases, collaborating with EAZWV colleagues, academic institutions, research centers, and regulatory bodies. He also maintained a close professional connection with the European College of Zoological Medicine through his leadership and contributions to the field.

Upon his passing, UAB shared:
“Hugo was not only an exceptional professional, but also a vital, intelligent, well-read, and generous person. His absence leaves a huge void in our hearts and our community.”

Dr. Hugo remained closely connected to ASB, returning as a guest speaker for our Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) classes, where students explore biodiversity and conservation. His most recent visit brought real-world insights that deeply resonated with students.

As Rafael Ortega (G12) shared:
“Students learned about international conservation efforts and the complexities of these systems. He conveyed a personable manner of teaching, allowing students to connect and further their learning. Dr. Hugo was able to impart the importance of conservation to students with ease while simultaneously engaging in philosophical discussions regarding how to prioritize diverse functions at the level of a zoo. Dr. Hugo created a space where students felt they could identify with him and form a bond, allowing them to feel comfortable discussing their own interests with compassionate reassurance. He left a legacy of inspiration, with students looking up to him as a mentor.”

Dr. Hugo encouraged students to think critically about their daily choices - transportation, consumption, and lifestyle habits - and how these decisions impact biodiversity and natural resource extraction on our fragile, shared planet. He was a man who led by example, held firm convictions, and shared his passions with humility and warmth.

Rest in peace, Hugo. Your legacy lives on in the minds and hearts of those you inspired.
