Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Eva Domingo Domenech (Class of 1989)

A Lifelong Learner Changing Lives Through Science.

We’re proud to spotlight alumna Dr. Eva Domingo Domenech ‘89, an accomplished hemato-oncologist whose groundbreaking work in T-cell lymphomas is giving hope to patients worldwide.

Eva’s journey with ASB began at the age of three. “My time at ASB was amazing,” she reflects. “I’ll always remember the fantastic teachers I had, the lifelong friends I made, and all the opportunities that came from the skills I gained, especially English.” Her years at ASB didn’t just provide a strong academic foundation but also opened doors to a global perspective that would define her career. Her siblings are also part of the ASB family: her brother, Josep, is a research oncologist in Minnesota, while her younger sister attended ASB until she was eight.

With medicine running deep in her family - parents, an uncle, a grandfather, and even a great-grandfather were all doctors - it’s no surprise Eva found her calling early on. She first considered pediatrics but eventually chose hematology, following in her parents’ footsteps. What drew her in was the unique balance of lab research and patient care. A prestigious European grant early in her career allowed her to study the causes of lymphomas, paving the way for her current focus on T-cell lymphomas, one of the rarest and most aggressive forms of blood cancer.

“These lymphomas are very rare and difficult to treat, but over the last decade, we’ve identified key cellular mechanisms that help explain how they develop,” Eva explains. “This knowledge is helping us find targeted treatments that could change patients’ lives.” One milestone stands out: three years ago, the first targeted treatment for T-cell lymphomas was approved by the European Medicines Agency, and Eva was part of the expert team that made it happen.

For Eva, collaboration is essential. By building national and international networks, she and her colleagues ensure patients with rare lymphomas receive the best possible care. “These cancers are so complex that working together across borders is vital,” she says.

Eva credits her time at ASB with giving her the skills she needed to thrive in an international field. “Fluent English was key. It allowed me to study abroad, join research groups, and stay connected globally. And growing up with classmates from around the world helped me better understand and relate to colleagues of many cultures,” she says. “I also had teachers who sparked my love for learning and taught me to stay curious every day.”

To today’s students, Eva offers heartfelt advice: “Medicine and science are true callings. You have to genuinely like helping people, be patient, and stay curious. These fields are changing fast, with AI and new discoveries transforming what’s possible. It’s an exciting time to be part of it.”

And if she could share one lesson with her younger self? “Be patient, work hard, stay enthusiastic about what you do, and above all, be kind and respectful to the people around you.”

Dr. Eva Domingo Domenech’s journey reminds us how the seeds planted at ASB continue to grow and flourish around the world. We’re so proud to count her among our alumni.
