Reflections from alumnus Carlos Enrique Bayo Falcón

A journey from ASB student to international investigative journalist.

Carlos Enrique Bayo Falcón’s journey from the American School of Barcelona to his illustrious career as an investigative journalist is truly remarkable. His experiences, from his time as a student (1962 until 1972) to his extensive travels and reporting across the globe, have undoubtedly shaped his perspective and fueled his passion for uncovering the truth.

Seeing his connection with ASB come full circle with the appointment of his wife, Vanessa Damiano, as the school’s Director of Finance and Operations this year is inspiring. The couple’s dedication to education, journalism, and their family is evident, and it’s wonderful to hear that they plan to continue their legacy at ASB by enrolling their twin daughters in 2025. Amazingly, Carlos’s relationship with Vanessa’s family began many years before they met as he began his journalistic career working with Vanessa’s grandfather on stories about freedom fighters during the dictatorship.

Carlos’s contributions to journalism, particularly his investigative work and recognition with prestigious awards, highlight the importance of holding power to account and uncovering hidden truths. His family’s rich history in journalism further underscores the depth of his commitment to the profession.

Carlos’s participation in Catalonia’s annual Sant Jordi festival alongside fellow journalists this year and the launch of his own publication, Villarejo: The Power of Secrets (El Poder de Los Secretos), demonstrate his ongoing engagement with the journalistic community and dedication to shedding light on important issues.

We look forward to welcoming him to campus soon, where he can undoubtedly inspire current students with his experiences and insights as a true journalistic icon.
