Marcus Sousa from Class of 2006

First time back on campus in 17 years.

Brazilian alum Marcus Sousa visited campus earlier this month for the first time since he graduated from the school in 2006. Now living in Sao Paulo, Marcus, who attended the American School of Barcelona from Grades 10 to 12 while his father was the Brazilian Consul General in Barcelona, visited the school with his wife and young daughter.

While the school has seen many changes since he was a student, Marcus was pleased to see two of his former teachers who are still on staff, Mr. Volchok and Mr. Bartlett (Physics). Unfortunately, he missed seeing Mr. Smith (Chemistry) and Mr. Brasher (History), who retired last year.

“I recall playing teacher vs. student football matches on Friday afternoons with Mr. Bartlett,” he shared. A keen sports enthusiast, Marcus was impressed at the green soccer field and improved sports facilities at the school, like the purpose-built gymnasium and athletics center, all so different from the dirt field he knew when he was a student.

During his visit, Marcus was also able to reconnect with two of his former classmates who now both work at the school, Mr. Joan Metzger (ECC teacher) and Ms. Elena Ballester (ES teacher), and reminisce together about other former friends like Jorge and Nico.

After graduating from ASB, Marcus moved back to Brazil, where he attended Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) University in Sao Paulo, majoring in Finance. Since 2014, he has worked in a private investment group he co-founded.
