From Barcelona to Guangzhou to Amsterdam - and Back to ASB!

Alumnus Alex Madigan ’25 returns to where it all began, sharing stories of his international journey and heartfelt ASB memories.

If you were part of the ASB community between 2005–2015, you might remember the Madigan family - Mr. Mitch (G3 & G5 teacher), Kathy (Admissions substitute and active PA member), and their boys, Alex ’25 and Noah ’28. We were thrilled to welcome Alex back to campus last week while on fall break from Amsterdam University College where he recently began studying biology and international relations after graduating from the American International School of Guangzhou in China, where his family now resides.

Born in Barcelona, Alex attended ASB from PK3 through Grade 2, the year our new elementary school opened in 2014. After ten years since he was last on campus, he enjoyed a heartwarming reunion with faculty and staff who remembered his family fondly, including his former teachers Ms. Heidi (Kindergarten), Ms. Lisa (Grade 1), and Ms. Silvia (Grade 2), as well as Ms. Meg who taught fifth grade with Mr. Mitch, all who are still teaching at ASB. A special surprise was reconnecting with his former classmate, senior Camila Berting, who returned to ASB last year after attending schools in Belgium and Korea. The Madigan and Berting families had been close friends during their time at ASB.

The afternoon was full of laughter, good memories, and even some surprisingly fluent Spanish from Alex. We can’t wait to see the rest of the Madigan family back on campus soon.
